What is a verruca?

Verrucas are simply warts that occur on the sole of the foot and are squashed so they look a little different. They are caused by the human papilloma virus and are easily picked up off wet floors. They are commonly caught in the changing rooms at gyms and swimming baths. They are usually harmless and naturally resolve when your immune system realises they are there and this can provide long term immunity. However sometimes they grow into hard lumps which can be painful to walk on or start to spread so they need treatment.

Ways to treat verrucae and warts

If it isn't too big or established freezing is usually the first method of treatment. It normally requires three or four treatments. Some verrucae can be very resistant to treatment particularly if they have been growing for more than six months, had previous treatment or are more than 5mm in diameter. For these we use needling or Swift microwave.

After treatment the skin should return to normal

  • Swift Microwave treatment works by killing the infected skin but also stimulating the natural immune response.

  • It is the best treatment for resistant verrucae

  • Usually a course of three treatments is enough to clear these verrucae and warts.
